Mainly composed by John Lennon, this song includes one of the coolest riffs of the rock music history. The song is based on a combination of the E major and the E minor scale, resulting in a scale made of the following notes: E, F#, G, G#, A, B, C, C#, D, D#.
The chord progression only utilizes major chords on the notes E, F#, G#, A, B and C#, which are the notes of the E pentatonic scale.
Pauls bassline includes the blue notes "G" and "D" as well as "C" derived from the E minor pentatonic + the "D#", which is the leading tone of the E major scale.
This is taking the Blues harmonic concepts one step further. Absolutely brilliant!
