Tekken 3 wasn’t just a fighting game; it was a crash course in rhythm, reflexes, and opponent psychology that happened to run on a PlayStation 1.
It first appeared in arcades in 1997 and later came to PS1, where it pushed the fighting genre several steps forward. Its biggest leap was making combat feel truly three-dimensional. Sidestepping wasn’t a gimmick anymore; it was a strategic tool. For the first time, space itself mattered, not just punches and kicks.
The roster felt like a slightly unhinged genetics lab. Jin Kazama stepped in to replace his father Kazuya, bringing a balanced but deep fighting style. Eddy Gordo and his capoeira convinced half the player base that the buttons were fighting on their own. King turned wrestling into something closer to solving a puzzle than throwing a punch. And Yoshimitsu looked like he escaped from a cyber-samurai fever dream.
Gameplay-wise, Tekken 3 was remarkably clean. No bloated systems, no noisy mechanics. Timing, spacing, and mind games decided everything. When you lost, it usually wasn’t the game’s fault; it was yours. That sting was painful, but it made you better.
