Thornton Quarry is one of the world's largest aggregate quarries and is over 450 feet(138 meters) deep at it's lowest point, but what makes it such a cool site is the full interstate highway that bisects it looking very tiny in comparison. The size becomes apparent when you see how tiny the 18 wheelers on the bridge look next to even this one side of the quarry. This side is now being used for runoff and water reclamation and is now inactive but the other side was crazy busy when we were there which is why we were unable to get a view from there. Drone flights are illegal in the area due to the proximity to O'Hare airport but even without it this is an awesome site that really makes you feel tiny.
