1938 Cadillac Series 75 Town Car, Fleetwood Body, Beautiful Older Restoration!

This is a rare and beautiful 1938 Cadillac Series 75 Town Car by Fleetwood that has been beautifully restored and cared for. This Town Car can be used for CCCA CARavans, tours and concours events. This was restored in the latter part of the 1990’s and is still in gorgeous condition today. The Town Cars are incredibly rare, and at a price of $5,115, it was the most expensive body style offering by Cadillac in 1938. Since this is the Series 75, the chassis and body are the same as the V-16, giving this Town Car an incredible presence.

This Town Car has delivered new to Detroit. It was owned by Steven Krelitz of Edina, MN before being acquired by John Kincade of St. Paul, MN on September 8, 1995. Mr. Kincade set out on a comprehensive restoration. He was known for driving the cars in his collection, so significant attention was made to ensure that this Cadillac drove well and was dependable. Much of the restoration work was done by Odyssey Restorations in Minnesota and the engine rebuild was performed by Cadillac Services in Petersburg, TN. A new wiring harness was acquired from Rhode Island Wiring. We have a comprehensive file of receipts from 1994 on documenting the restoration and maintenance.

The livery is stunning in its deep and rich black paint with ample chrome. The paint is well polished and has wonderful depth and shine. There are several small touched up chips from normal use, but they are only visible upon close inspection. The chrome is overall in very nice condition today. The correct formal black vinyl top is in excellent condition as is the black canvas top over the chauffeur’s compartment. The running board rubber is original and, while useable, the car would benefit from the replacement of the rubber. The Trippe Safety lights look great on the front of the car and the wide white walled tires complete the formal presentation.

The interior is in overall very nice condition. The grey cloth interior and mosstread carpeting is all in very nice condition. Being a Town Car, the interior features several cabinets, pockets and such, including the elegant art deco ash trays and cigar lighters. The woodwork is stunning with multiple veneers being used and an art deco Fleetwood clock inset in the center of the divider. Two jump seats are included in the rear compartment, allowing for six or more passengers. The chauffeur’s compartment is finished in black vinyl and black painted wood trim. The faux wood grained dash and instruments have been refinished during the restoration and are in good condition. The steering wheel has many cracks and we are installing a leather wrapping to cover the cracks and to make it more comfortable to hold.

Cadillacs venerable 346 CID V8 delivered 140 hp and the shift lever was moved to the steering column for 1938. This Town Car shifts easily and well through the three speeds. Being a Series 75, the ride is smooth and comfortable on its 141-inch wheelbase. The suspension is quiet and very smooth. The gauges work well and there is an auxiliary more precise temperature gauge installed, although during our test drives it ran well and operated at correct temperatures. As stated before, Mr. Kincade was known for driving his cars, so mechanical details were very important. As is always a concern with division windowed cars, the driving position is comfortable for us at 6’3″ and 215 pounds.
