보성 임진영 고택(보성군 향토문화유산) / Boseong Im Jin-young Historic House

보성군에는 향토문화유산으로서 그 가치를 인정받은 고택들이 있는데 그중 하나가 보성읍에 있는 임진영 고택이다.조선시대에 지어진 임진영 고택은 정면 5칸, 측면 1칸의 목조 기와집으로 지붕은 홑처마의 팔작지붕에 한식기와를 얹었으며, 당시 일반적인 상류 주택의 배치 방법과 달리 ‘ㄷ’자형 배치의 특이한 구조로 되어 있다.
임진영의 조부가 지은 이 고택은 땅에서 올라오는 습기로부터 집을 보호하기 위해 비교적 높은 마루 형태로 건축 되었고 방 주 위에는 조그마한 기둥 머리를 놓고 도리 밑에 놓인 도리받침부재인 장여 위에는 6각형의 도리를 놓았다.
임진영 고택은 대들보가 다른 가옥에 비해 무척 큰 편이며 전후좌우 툇집으로 배면에는 쪽마루가 있고 다듬돌 바른층 쌓기의 기단 위에 사각형의 장대석 형태의 주춧돌을 놓았다.
임진영 고택에서는 보기 드문 예가 발견 되었는데 그것은 바로 부엌과 큰방 사이에 삼각형 모양으로 된 연기막이다. 이는 다른 곳에도 찾아보기 힘든 사례로 부엌에서 불을 땔 때 안방으로 연기가 유입되는 것을 막기 위해 설치 된 것이다.
임진영 고택에는 설주 송운회의 글씨와 보성 가사리 장롱을 비롯한 고서화, 목물, 석물 등이 소장 돼 있으며 ‘ㄷ’자형 구조 중 건물 가운데 일부를 한옥스테이 민박시설로 개방하고 있다. 임진영 고택은 조선시대 양반가에서 흔히 볼 수 없는 독특한 구조를 지닌 가옥으로 보성 향토문화유산의 가치를 넘어 건축사적으로도 그 가치가 충분하다.


Boseong-gun is home to several traditional residences recognized for their value as local cultural heritage, one of which is the Im Jin-young Historic House in Boseong-eup. Constructed during the Joseon Dynasty, this wooden tile-roofed house features a five-bay (jeongmyeon) front and one-bay (cheukmyeon) side, topped with a single-eaved, hip-and-gable roof (paljak jibung) covered with traditional Korean tiles (hansik giwa). Unlike the conventional layout of upper-class residences at the time, it is distinguished by its unique ‘ㄷ’-shaped (U-shaped) configuration.
Built by Im Jin-young’s grandfather, this historic house was elevated on a relatively high platform to protect it from ground moisture. Small pillar caps (gidu meori) support the structure, while hexagonal beams (dori) rest on jangyeo (beam supports) beneath the horizontal beams. The main beam (daedeulbo) is notably larger than those found in other residences, and the structure is surrounded by front, rear, left, and right verandas (toetjip), with a narrow wooden porch (jjokmaru) at the rear. The foundation consists of a dressed stone base (dadoleum barunchung chukgi), topped with rectangular long foundation stones (jangdaeseok choseok).
A unique architectural feature of the Im Jin-young Historic House is the triangular smoke-blocking wall (yeonggimak), positioned between the kitchen and the main room. This rarely seen design was installed to prevent smoke from the kitchen fire from entering the living quarters, making it a notable architectural element.
The historic house also houses a collection of cultural artifacts, including calligraphy by Seolju Song Un-hoe, a traditional Boseong Gasari Wardrobe, and various old books, paintings, wooden artifacts, and stone objects. Additionally, part of the ‘ㄷ’-shaped structure has been opened to the public as a hanok stay guesthouse, allowing visitors to experience traditional Korean housing.
The Im Jin-young Historic House, with its uncommon structure rarely seen in Joseon-era aristocratic residences (yangban gakwol), holds significant value not only as a Local Cultural Heritage of Boseong-gun but also as an important example in the history of Korean architecture.
