South Sudan’s political tensions are escalating! Opposition lawmaker Gatwech Lam Puoch has been arrested by the National Security Service (NSS) in Juba and is now detained at the notorious Blue House detention center. Gatwech, a senior SPLM-IO member and close ally of First Vice President Riek Machar, was taken from his residence in Thonypiny neighborhood.
His arrest follows deadly clashes in Nasir, Upper Nile State, that left several dead, including a high-ranking army commander. The government has since intensified its crackdown, detaining multiple high-profile officials, including Petroleum Minister Puot Kang and several senior military personnel:
🔴 Arrested Alongside Puot Kang:
1️⃣ Camilo Gatmach
2️⃣ Nelson Malou
3️⃣ Kun Tut
4️⃣ Peter Magong
5️⃣ Koang Puk
6️⃣ Biluny Puk
7️⃣ Buay Thiechuong
🔴 Two others remain unidentified.
Meanwhile, security has been tightened around Riek Machar’s residence, raising further concerns. The East African bloc IGAD has condemned the arrests, warning that they threaten to destabilize the fragile 2018 peace agreement.
🚨 Will this crackdown derail South Sudan’s fragile unity government?
