Herman Viola, Ph.D., Curator Emeritus, National Museum of the American Indian, shares part of his presentation The Indian Legacy of Charles Bird King. Dr. Viola presented during the 2015 symposium The Gilcrease Archives: Unlocking the History of the Americas. Charles Bird King, one of the least known early American artists, yet one who rivaled George Catlin as a portrait painter. King recorded the features and wardrobes of more than 100 American Indian leaders in the pre-camera era. His artistic legacy is documented in McKenney and Hall’s History of the Indian Tribes of North America, our nation’s first color publication.
