Talyllyn Railway and Transport:
The Talyllyn Railway, which starts from Tywyn, is the world's first volunteer-run heritage railway and the first narrow gauge line in the UK officially licensed to carry passengers by steam locomotives (opened in 1865).
Race the Train, an annual 22.5km cross-country race, which starts in Tywyn, challenges runners to outrun a steam train along the Talyllyn Railway route. Elite runners have completed the course in under 1 hour and 19 minutes.
The town's name is derived from the Welsh word tywyn, meaning "sand dune" or "beach". Vast dunes lie to both the north and south of Tywyn.
At low tide, the peat layers on the southern beach reveal carved square patterns and remnants of a sunken forest - some locals compare them to natural hot tubs filled with seawater.
