Welcome back to the summer of ’66!
In June, 1966 - The last episode of The Dick Van Dyke Show aired (June 1), Janis Joplin made her debut as a rock vocalist with Big Brother and the Holding Company in San Francisco (June 10), The U.S. Supreme Court made the “Miranda Warning” mandatory before questioning suspects (June 13), the “battle of Hill 488” in Vietnam occurred in which 18 men in the Marine platoon Charlie Company held off over 400 Viet Cong fighters (June 15) , and “Dark Shadows” debuted on ABC (June 27).
On the Billboard Hot 100 Chart today:
1) Paint It, Black – The Rolling Stones
2) Did You Ever Have to Make Up Your Mind – The Lovin’ Spoonful
3) I Am A Rock – Simon and Garfunkel
4) When A Man Loves A Woman – Percy Sledge
5) Strangers in the Night – Frank Sinatra
14) Opus 17 (Don’t You Worry ‘Bout Me) – The Four Season
82) Hungry – Paul Revere and the Raiders (New on the charts this week)
Good job producers: The Bandstand Top 10 today had 7 songs that were actually in the Billboard Top 10 and 2 songs in the Top 20 - “Paperback Writer” (next week’s #1 song) and “Opus 17”. The only song on the list not in the top 20 today was “He” by the Righteous Brothers.
While she doesn’t appear in-person today, we see Peggy Waggoner several times as that is her in the picture shown to promote the Bathing Beauties contest.
Notes: The May 6, 1967 episode has been blocked by YT. It is odd because 5 songs in that episode suddenly became blocked and these same songs (“Mirage”, “The Happening”, and even “Bandstand Boogie”) are not blocked elsewhere on YT. I made a few minor changes and tried reposting it this week but it was blocked in about 5 minutes. I hope this is just a mistake, which has happened before, and it will be brought back soon. Sorry about that.
Full disclosure, I work in healthcare here in Las Vegas and we are getting swamped at the hospital where I work with all of the new COVID patients flooding in. (much worse here than March or April). Sharing these clips and reading your comments is such a nice diversion for me and I sincerely hope they are for you as well, especially in these troubled times. Stay safe and please wear a mask. Thank you so much for watching!
What’s Next: I have about 6 or 7 more clips and 2 or 3 more full episodes left to share, so there’s still more to come. Please stay tuned.
