Welcome back to the Contact Buzz lofi sessions! The first one of 2026 is the calm but deadly Alt rock band Supermaus. Having heard their recordings from their Nave sessions and Helen's hushed tones, you could hear how nicely it would translate to tape. Organising the location themselves, we headed to the new Boom venue, where they also have a practice room, just to the left of the main room.
The first port of call, as always, was the drums. I really loved the trashy, but impactful sound we got, brilliant precise playing from Ragna. As we got ready to record bass, after threatening to do so for some time, Tom’s Bass literally exploded. Gutted we didn't get it on camera. Out came Boom’s personal hell bass, with a huge gate chain as the strap. Not very comfy I imagine.
Then we started to realise, today might have been the wrong day to record here. Boom catapulted into life, with a hardcore gig kicking off in the other room, we realised time was precious. Between the breaks we recorded Michael’s Guitar, expertly done, he didn't miss a beat. It was when we came to recording Helen's voice that the other room became unrelenting. We decided to call it a day, with the perfect take being overblown by me miss calibrating my preamp. What can you do? These things happen.
We reconvened the next week at Ragna's place to get the vocal take we hoped for. Helen rarely reaches over 60db, but makes for a breathy unease that changes the whole atmosphere of the song. Really attention grabbing stuff.
For fans of PJ Harvey and The Cure
