Keaton Beach, FL (Post Helene) - (S1:Ep8 Everything Dog Goes Everywhere - Full-Time RV Adventures)

In this episode, we travel from Wachula, Florida, to Keaton Beach, FL, as we continue our journey through the warmer states for the winter. Keaton Beach wasn’t on our radar for any particular reason except that it was warm, near the Gulf, and the campground we stayed at, Gulf Front R.V. Park, was small with full hookups.

Our visit to Keaton Beach told the tale of 2 cities.

City 1: Absolutely lovely beach community on the Gulf where the people were welcoming, food was good, Fiddler crabs were abundant, and sunsets were glorious.

City 2: A community that has been devastated by Hurricane Helene, with some estimates being that somewhere between 65% and 90% of the homes that once stood there are gone. Our visit was about 5 months after Helene, and there was still so much clean-up to be done that rebuilding hadn’t really started. The people we stopped and talked to were resilient with great love for their community, and they were understandably sad for what they witnessed and lost. It was an incredibly humbling experience to be there.

This stop was a little different from our previous stops. Yes, we enjoyed another lovely part of Florida, but there was also a heaviness to witnessing the debris piles, ongoing clean-up efforts, and empty lots where houses and businesses once stood. Being from the Northeast, we did not have a good sense of what kind of damage hurricanes could do. Now we know.

Our hearts go out to the community of Keaton Beach and those in other communities affected by similar disasters.

We were so happy to support these good folks as they recover from the hurricane damage. The owners of the resort are a lovely couple and their home, located on the property, is a total loss. They are currently living in an RV as they wait to rebuild.
