Congresswoman Sykes participated in a Transportation and Infrastructure Subcommittee on Highways and Transit entitled, “America Builds: A Review of Programs to Address Roadway Safety.” During the hearing, the Congresswoman highlighted the importance of funding the Railroad Crossing Elimination Program, which provides funds to improve the mobility and safety of highway-rail and pathway-rail grade crossings.
Anyone who has lived near a rail crossing understands the inconvenience and dangers that railroad crossings pose to local drivers, bikers, and pedestrians, as well as for the rail workers who staff trains.
But these crossings don’t just pose threats to the people passing through – they are also cumbersome for the communities that surround them, as they are very costly to improve or outright remove. This means that the federal dollars coming in to address issues with rail crossings are invaluable resources for creating safer communities for our constituents.
