Chronic Bronchitis vs Emphysema Pathophysiology, Treatment, Nursing, Symptoms | COPD NCLEX Review

Chronic bronchitis vs emphysema nursing lecture on the pathophysiology, treatment, and symptoms. In this video, I review the similarities between emphysema vs chronic bronchitis and highlight the differences. The biggest differences between chronic bronchitis and emphysema are the pathophysiology and disease specific symptoms. In chronic bronchitis, there is excessive production of mucous and inflammation of the bronchioles. However, in emphysema there is the loss of elasticity of the alveolar sacs. Both conditions lead to respiratory acidosis. However, there is a V/Q mismatch in chronic bronchitis and a matched V/Q defect in emphysema and because of this the body compensates differently. In chronic bronchitis (also called blue bloaters) the patient will have cyanosis and bloating (from hyperinflation and late effects of cor pulmonale). In emphysema (called pink puffers), the patient will have hyperventilation and a barrel chest (no cyanosis due to the hyperventilation). Both conditions are irreversible, caused by inhaling an irritants (mainly smoking), and treated with bronchodilators, corticosteroids, theophylline, or Phosphodiesterase-4 inhibitors.
