サムライ・アート展　─刀剣、印籠、武具甲冑、武者絵、合戦絵─ 　Samurai Art: The Warrior Aesthetic of Feudal Japan

刀剣や甲冑をはじめとする武器・武具類は、実戦で用いられるのと同時に、武威や家格を誇示する宝物として珍重され、鑑賞の対象とされました。

優れた工芸技術と武家文化の隆盛を背景に、刀などの武器・武具は日本独自の発展を遂げ、今日では「サムライ・アート」とも称されます。

現代に伝わる武士の遺愛の品は、消費され失われた実用品とは一線を画し、いずれも武士の美意識や匠のこだわりを反映しており、贅を尽くした逸品といえます。また、歴史上の戦や軍記物語を題材とした合戦絵や武者絵には、武具甲冑を身に帯び、刀を振るって戦う侍の勇姿が溌剌と描かれています。

本展では当館の収蔵品を中心として、刀剣、刀装具、甲冑、兜などを一堂に展覧するとともに、絵画資料に描かれた武士の姿を紹介し、「サムライ・アート」の魅力に迫ります。

The bushi—Japan’s feudal warrior caste—and their battles were glorified by artists of the time, portrayed on picture scrolls, folding screens and other works in uniquely Japanese fashion.

Our “Samurai Art” exhibition features many of the bushi’s personal articles, from the most essential like his tachi longsword and armor, to the inro belt-hung case containing small items of fairly prosaic utility.

All, however, were crafted with exquisite care and beauty by master artisans, making these works the caste’s most cherished possessions. The majority of pieces on display are drawn from our museum’s collection, with the rest on loan from art museums from around the world.
