This is the second time I'm covering Mumbai to Delhi/ Gurugram via Mumbai delhi expressway also known as NE4, it is not full made, there is no progress in the road conditions. total toll costs around Rs.2200.
Untill and unless you guys are travelling 4 people and you are car entuthiasts, avoid this route for now, till the whole expressway is completed.
Flight can be your preferred option, unless you want to carry something heavy or unofficial.
Roads are not good while you stay in Maharastra, It gets better in Gurjat and Madhaya pradesh, after mid of MP you are on Expressway, which might have to get off the expresswya , as it is not full completed at all sections.
