Bihar COVID-19 Ground Coverage: DMCH (Darbhanga Medical College and Hospital) is the second largest hospital in Bihar. DMCH is the prime government hospital for people from Darbhanga and surrounding districts. DMCH, established nearly a century before in 1925, was initially called Temple of medical learning. It was built on the land donated by Darbhanga maharaj Rameshwar Singh. It is said that when Prince of Wales visited Bihar in 1925, Maharaja invited him to visit this hospital. Prince of Wales was so impressed with this hospital that he, on behalf of British Government, proposed to the Maharaja that it be converted into a medical college. Maharaja accepted the offer. In 1946, this hospital was upgraded into a medical college and handed over to the government. Once a glorious center, DMCH
has become a sorrow saga of neglect. Even basic hygiene is not maintained. To see the conditions here, Team Lallantop visited DMCH amid COVID pandemic. What we found here is shocking. Waterlogged compound, buildings declared unsafe for any activity, pigs playing inside the main hospital compound, open and overflowing drains, pathetic toilets...condition of DMCH is horrific.
