Demolition Herby is a fast-paced arcade-style “paint it” game released in 1983 for the Atari 2600 by Telesys and programmed by Don Ruffcorn. Inspired by classics like Amidar, the game places players on a grid-based track where the goal is to drive Herby’s car across lines to paint them red while avoiding and strategically ramming dangerous chase cars. Every move counts, as fuel management plays a critical role—run out of fuel and your car explodes instantly.
Players earn points by blacking out squares, completing multiple squares with a single line, and smashing rival vehicles from the correct direction. Ramming chase cars sends them flying off the track temporarily, but poor timing can cost multiple lives at once. An Overdrive button boosts speed at the expense of fuel, adding a risk-versus-reward mechanic rarely seen on the Atari 2600. Supporting one or two players with multiple game variations, Demolition Herby stands out as a challenging, skill-based title and a sought-after collectible due to its limited release and high rarity.
