What can a necklace, a ring, or a jeweled feather tell us about Tudor England?
In this special episode, you’re listening to a live Tudorcon talk by Terry Jones, longtime docent at Agecroft Hall, exploring how jewelry functioned as power, protection, memory, and messaging in the Tudor and early Stuart worlds.
From the Order of the Garter and royal portrait jewels to pearls, signet rings, magical thinking, and the very practical reality of wearing your wealth around your neck, this talk looks at how men and women used jewelry to signal identity, loyalty, status, and belief. Along the way, you’ll hear about Henry VIII, Elizabeth I, Anne of Denmark, foreign jewelers at the English court, and why Tudor portraits are rarely as quiet or respectable as they first appear.
This recording comes from Tudorcon, our annual conference for Tudor and early modern history fans. A heads-up for anyone who’s been thinking about presenting: the Call for Papers for Tudorcon 2025 will be released in January.
Because this was recorded live, you’ll hear audience questions and the natural rhythm of an in-person talk.
