ATOMISWAVE — Hardware Overview

The Atomiswave is an arcade system developed by Sammy and released in 2003. It is closely related to Sega’s Dreamcast and NAOMI hardware, using very similar internal architecture but packaged specifically for arcade operators. Games were distributed on ROM cartridges rather than optical media, making them quick and easy to swap in busy arcade environments. The system was designed to be flexible, supporting a wide range of control types such as standard joysticks, light guns, steering wheels, and trackballs depending on the game.

At its core, Atomiswave runs on a Hitachi SH-4 RISC processor paired with a PowerVR2 graphics chip, giving it strong 3D capabilities for the time, including smooth texture filtering, transparency effects, and solid polygon performance. Audio is handled by the Yamaha AICA sound system, providing high-quality music and sound effects similar to the Dreamcast. While not as expandable as NAOMI, Atomiswave offered a cost-effective and reliable arcade platform, particularly popular with SNK fighters and action titles.
