Lately, I've been sharing insights into the life and adventures of sailors, along with brief stories about the places I've had the chance to visit. For the past three months, I have been working as the captain of a small Greek bulk carrier, Dimaizo, with a deadweight of 3,400 tons. We mainly travel around the Mediterranean, enjoying its mild and pleasant climate.
This time, I’ll introduce you to the ancient Greek city of Kavala, where we delivered the remaining cargo of urea from the port of Volos. As usual, we will wander through the charming streets of this historic town, explore its landmarks, and savor the local cuisine. In short, I’ll show you the many joys of a sailor’s life. So, let’s get started!
Arrival in Kavala
Our journey from the port of Volos to Kavala was a short one since both ports are located in Greece and not far from each other. After mooring the vessel at the quay, I set out to find the city center. It turned out to be behind a mountain, so I had to take a ride in our ship agent’s car to get there.
The city impressed me with its abundance of restaurants and bars. Tourists strolled leisurely along the waterfront, while luxurious yachts lined the docks. At the very top of the mountain stood an ancient fortress, which once served as the city's main defense. After wandering through Kavala’s picturesque streets, I found a cozy little restaurant and treated myself to delicious mussels, a Greek salad, and a cold beer. A curious cat approached me, and I shared a mussel with him. After lunch, I enjoyed a cup of excellent coffee accompanied by a glass of cold water.
I then climbed up to the fortress, where a breathtaking panoramic view of the city and harbor unfolded before my eyes. And now, a bit of history...
Kavala – The Story of an Ancient Greek Port City
This city, located in northeastern Greece on the shores of the Aegean Sea, boasts a rich history intertwined with trade, warfare, and cultural development.
Ancient Times: The City of Neapolis
Kavala’s history dates back to antiquity. The first settlements appeared in the 6th century BC when the Thracians established themselves in this strategically important location. However, the city truly flourished in the 5th century BC, when it became a Greek colony of Thasos and was named Neapolis, meaning “New City.”
Neapolis served as a crucial port for trade between mainland Greece and Asia Minor. The city housed temples dedicated to Greek gods and maintained strong ties with Athens and later with Macedonia.
The towering cranes slowly moved away for their well-earned rest. The next morning, divers arrived by boat to repair the rudder blade, and the work began. All repairs were completed in less than 12 hours, with the superintendent personally overseeing and approving the job. Everything went smoothly.
At dawn, a tugboat approached and assisted us in leaving the harbor, setting us free into the open waters of the Mediterranean.
The adventures continue!
