These Climbing French Beans are being sown in the same way as green dwarf beans, individual seeds in separate cells to germinate in a greenhouse or on a window sill. The weather is still too cold here in Dublin towards the end of April to sow the seeds directly on the vegetable plot. Always pay attention to the local conditions before sowing or planting out. These climbing beans will be grown up a tripod of canes in the same way as Runner Beans. As with the dwarf variety they like to grow in a humus rich soil so manure was added to the plot where they will be planted out. This variety is purple skinned for a bit of variety on the allotment, they are reputed to hold their colour if steamed. If you like french beans and are short of space in your garden why not grow the climbing variety as you will get plenty of beans without using too much ground.
