Rusty Old Pliers Restoration - Back To Basics

You guys spoke and i listened! Really Random Channel is back! and with it comes a whole new series of videos that are shorter and more to the point but most importantly of all they are still Random and fun to watch! :)

This new video is the restoration of a very old and rusty pair of fencing pliers that were sourced at my local car boot sale. As soon as i saw them i knew they would make a great video.

The first job as usual is the visual inspection to check that there are no major defects that would make the item unsuitable for restoration but im glad to say they passed with flying colours.

Next stage was a thorough going over with the super sketchy bench grinder and wire wheel attachment on an old drill to remove all loose rust and paint before letting the pliers soak in a bath of DEOX C rust remover overnight to remove all traces of rust from all the hard to reach areas.

Once meticulously rinsed to remove all traces of the rust eating acid the now shiny bare steel pliers were chocked up in the vice and i broke out my file set and set about the long job of reshaping and sharpening all of the gripping and cutting surfaces of the pliers once i was happy that the teeth were all the correct shape and angles the welder was deployed to fill in a cut that was present on the nose of the pliers once welded up it was simply a case of dressing back the weld.

After those steps came the next exciting one and that was restoring the perfectly flat brushed effect that these pliers would have had from the factory when new, I achieved this result by using a worn 80 grit belt on my belt sander so as not remove too much material but also be left with a nice grainy finish. After about half an hour of sanding i was happy with the finish and had a go at a new process.

Hardening the steel is all new to me but im glad to say it worked out ok but im sure you guys will have a lot of tips and tricks to share with me in the comment section ;). For the heating process i chose to use my old paraffin blowlamp -    • Видео   for a bit of fun and nostalgia. It worked rather well in getting the steel upto the temperatures required for the two quenching stages.

Once the hardening was completed the finish was obviously blackend from the motor oil and the heat but it was a simple case of attacking it with the bench grinder again and then refining the finish with a bit of emery cloth.

After that i thoroughly degreased the steel to get rid of any oils and then mixed up a batch of super hard wearing self etching enamel for the handles. I was going to leave the finish smooth for a more pleasing look but as i will be using these pliers i decided to add rubber granules to the paint for added grip and comfort. Then it was simply a case of dipping the handles in the paint a few times then letting them cure.

Once cured i coated the bare steel surfaces with wd-40 to protect them from moisture in the air and to lubricate the pin in the jaw so the pliers dont seize up. Then it was onto the final shots.
