Just wrapped a 2,200km road trip from Hervey Bay to Adelaide including 500km of the Darling river run. The main point of the trip was to move house so we had a tonne of crap with us and were pretty heavy. It was still five days of adventure.
Started in Hervey Bay after a family holiday. Drove through green hills, cotton fields, and Bunya Mountains. Vicky swerved a massive combine harvester. Bug swarms near Moonie had us wiping the windscreen constantly. Couple of close calls with kangaroos. Camped behind Westmar pub—good feed, lively crowd.
Day 2: St George for breakfast, then Goodooga’s plains. Mirages kept us sharp as they looked like floodwater. We skipped a few sketchy towns, stopped in Bourke for fuel and restock. We hit the Darling River Run late. Aired down to 25 PSI and camped at Trilby Station by the river. Fire, food, and station history made the night. 10/10 would recommend staying here if you ever get the chance.
Day 3: Sunrise at Trilby, then dirt roads to Tilpa pub where we stopped and wrote our name on the walls ($5 donation to RFDS). Road colours shifted non-stop—called it Rainbow Road. Pushed past Wilcannia to Menindee Lakes. Camped in Kinchega National Park, being careful not to setup under falling gumtrees, we spent the afternoon exploring the park which was epic. At midnight there was a huge downpour.
Day 4: Woke to mud everywhere, packing up was messy. On the way out we were sliding all across the road, came across a a bogged Forester and helped them out with our recovery boards and dropping their tyre pressure. Broken Hill’s Junction Mine and Wild West vibe were unreal. Good pub burger, haircut, and a pavement swag-drying session. Camped 7km out of town by a solar farm, the flies and wind were ruthless.
Last day, freezing morning and left camp early. Manna Hill pub coffee was basic but hit the spot. Stopped at a Midnight Oil album house, then Burra’s mine museum and stone buildings. South Australia’s dry farms stood out. Rolled into Adelaide, car filthy with Menindee mud.
Unloaded the car then cleaned it as it was desperate.
Can’t wait to get back to the outback for the next one.
