A plant that goes by many names, the Feijoa or Pineapple Guava (Feijoa sellowiana syn. Orthostemon sellowianus) is a large fruiting shrub, with edible fruit and flowers. This attractive broadleaf evergreen is somewhat cold hardy too. This plant sets fruit in the fall and blooms all summer, offering year round interest with glossy simple-margined Arbutus-like leaves.
Plant difficulty out of 10 (in my opinion): 3
The Pineapple Guava has interesting, highly fragranced white flowers of 5 to 7 parts, with clusters of interesting red anthers and filaments in the center. The flowers are high in Ester methyl benzoate, a natural alcohol that makes it smell AMAZING. Flowers extend approximately 8 cm from end to end in diameter. Blooms persist for about 2-4 days generally.
Pineapple Guava also has a rich brassy exfoliating bark, resembling the Acer griseum (Paperbark Maple)
This plant is native to high altitude plains in South America, namely in Brazil but also Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, and Colombia.
The skin of the fruit is edible, however it is somewhat chewy. Fruits with the skin make a nice chutney though;))
