No trip to Surat would be complete without a visit to this very busy and popular market.
The market has a buzzing atmosphere and expect to haggle down any price that you're given by the trader (it's common practice by the seller to quote a higher initial price; in the expectation that the buyer will offer a lesser price to finalise the purchase), do not be daunted by the bargaining process it can add an additional dimension of fun to the whole buying process.
This is very much a ladies market but there are many foodie treats in store for the men (who invariably have to wait around while the wife goes saree shopping)........the waiting around needn't be boring especially with the large range of street food being served up such as Pani Puri, an Infinite variety of Masala Dosas, Wada Pau, Pav Bhaji, Sugar Cane Juice, Samosas, Idly Sambar + all the sweet treats such as: Ice Cream, Cold Cocoa drink, Falooda, plus much, much, much more...........
Chauta Bazaar is one of the oldest markets in surat.
The history of Chauta Bazaar dates back to early the 1700s. All the shops at the time then were owned by the Vaishnao traders.
The present day Mota Mandir in Chauta was known as Vaishnao Haveli. There were shops surrounding the Haveli where the ladies visiting the temple would go also shopping for utensils, clothes, cosmetics, grocery and other day to day household goods.
