In this 3 1/2 minute piano & vocal performance video of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" song, you'll see the simple chord chart I'm playing from and see the chords being played. Note the simplicity of the playing. It's mostly just playing the 1-3-5 notes of each chord in different inversions, sometimes adding the "2" note, and sometimes arpeggiating the chords (playing the chord notes individually.)
The only two chords that aren't just Major or minor chords are:
► E7 - That's what's called a "dominant 7" chord, meaning the 7 note is two half steps down from the 8 note, making the chord note E-G#-B-D
► Dm/F - That's called a "slash chord" and it tells you to play Dm (D-minor) chord with your right hand while playing "F" as the bass note in the left hand.
Whether you're here to just enjoy the song performance or to see what the chart looks like or to see the playing choices I made, welcome! I've broken my playing style into a series of repeatable patterns that I teach on PianoGenius.com, and once you know those patterns you can just apply them to other songs as well. It's way more fun than laboring to read sheet music and play everything exactly note-for-note like a robot.
PLUS, if you go to https://www.pianogenius.com/hall/ to download the free simple chord chart you'll also see a link to try out becoming an All Access member, which will let you check out the rest of the Hallelujah training videos to see how I add the song melody to the chords without using sheet music.
