Classic TV Theme: Riverboat (Two Versions)

A pretty good cast in this 1959 Western: Darrin McGavin, Burt Reynolds, Noah Beery Jr, and a pretty good roster of guest stars portraying famous people of the time from Zachary Taylor to Honest Abe himself. Elmer Bernstein composed a terrific theme in the style of his 'Magnificent 7' score; it gets short shrift in the opening titles (drowned out by sound effects) but gets a good workout in the closing credits.
For some unknown reason Bernstein's theme was tossed for the second season and the usually reliable Gerald Fried came up with a banjo-styled tune. Why the change? Only the programming gods know but the replacement is no match for the original.
