We’ve found that you need accessories to optimize the composting process, whether using the Geobin® or another method.

Our three “go-to’s” to make composting easier and to bump up results are a compost thermometer, aerator, and extended-length bulb auger.

Our 24” (61 cm) compost thermometer is from Reotemp. We’ve had one for many years and it has served us well. We don’t leave it in the pile - we put it back in the garden shed to keep it out of the sun and keep the painted dial and lens in good condition.

A compost aerator allows you to keep the pile active longer by mixing materials in place - in the interior of the pile while introducing oxygen and redistributing water. We got ours from Yard Butler, for about $50. It is “T” shaped, with pivoting wings on the end of the tool shaft. When the aerator is pushed into the pile, the wings fold back. Then the tool is at the desired depth, the handle is lifted, and the wings open and mix the pile while the t-handle is rotated. Spiffy!

We’ve recently added Power Planter’s 3” (76 mm) diameter bulb auger - 36” (91 cm) length. Chucked in a cordless (non-impact driver type) ½” (13 mm) drill, this allows significant mixing in place, with less effort.
