Easily one of my favorite performances by Ringo. This is a song I’ve heard since I was a little kid and only recently realized that there are numerous drum overdubs that are essential to the track. The isolated drum track really highlights the tom overdubs coming out of the chorus. I was also fortunate to stumble on a video discussing the recording of this song and in the video there is a brief audio clip of the basic track during the ending of a chorus where you hear the drums without the tom overdub. This made it easy for me to figure out what was most likely being played in those sections. Here is a link to that video.

The audio clip can be heard around the 2:10 mark in the video. The isolated drum track also makes it very clear that the tom fills are overdubbed. There is a sonic difference in how the toms sound and to my ear, they are more muffled sounding than the toms on the rest of the track. You can also hear the distinct flam effect between what’s played on the initial basic drum track and what the overdubs are playing.

The bridge section is where all the action takes place. What can you say about Ringo’s playing here? So creative and unique. No other drummer would have come up with this! I just tried to do my best to capture it all as best as I could.
