SSA quietly flags immigrants as ‘deceased’ | What that really means

The Social Security Administration has come under scrutiny after reports that it has begun listing thousands of immigrants with temporary legal status as deceased, automatically invalidating their Social Security numbers and cutting off access to jobs, federal programs, banks, and benefits.

According to CBS News, the SSA recently renamed its Death Master File — used to track deceased individuals and prevent improper benefit payments — to the “Ineligible Master File.” Individuals added to the file lose access to financial services and federal support.
