LARYNGOSCOPY
Laryngoscopy is the procedure where your ENT doctor will examine your throat in great detail.
It is either an OPD procedure or can be done in the Endoscopy Theatre.
For some Therapeutic procedures an OT(Operation Theatre) set up may be required.
Though the oral cavity and oropharynx can be easily visualized by a simple throat examination, examination of the deeper structures like the epiglottis, base of tongue, larynx, trachea etc requires visualization at an angle since these strutures are so placed.
Initially this examination used to be done using mirrors - a procedure called Indirect Laryngoscopy. There were inherent inaccuracies in this procedure and with the advent of rigid angled telescopes which permits us to record a video as well as take still pictures, the preferable method is now either a Rigid Telescopic examination or a Flexible Fibreoptic Laryngoscopy.
RIGID TELESCOPY - LARYNGOSCOPY
This is a short and quick procedure where after making you sit comfortably on a chair, your ENT Specialist will spray some Local Anaesthetic or numbing spray into your throat.
The tongue is held forward and the throat is examined systematically - starting from the posterior pharyngeal wall, the base of the Tongue, the Epiglottis, Arey Epiglottic folds, the Larynx, to the Hypopharynx.
Quite often the subglottis and part of the Trache can also be visualized clearly.
DIAGNOSTIC VERSUS THERAPEUTIC LARYNGOSCOPY
Though a Laryngoscopy procedure is largely diagnostic, some procedures on the throat and Larynx can also be performed using the same set up.
This will include injections and other procedures on the vocal cords for simple lesions as well as for Laryngeal Paralysis.
Summarising, a Laryngoscopy is a safe and essential OPD procedure for diagnosing and sometimes for treating throat problems.
