When people say that music transcends cultural boundaries and languages, they are talking about music like this. Los Angeles-based artist Gayathri Krishnan (@gayathriikrishnan) infuses traditional Carnatic music, a classical music tradition of Southern India, characterized by a strong emphasis on vocals, intricate rhythmic cycles (tala), and melodic frameworks (raga) based on ancient Hindu traditions and scriptures, with R&B to create what feels like the longest hug, by the softest person you know. An embrace that shouldn’t end, but instead reminds you that you “Made It.”
My music theory spidey senses tingle with songs that have so many complex layers as this one. It’s approachable by everyone, but taps into a soulfulness found in both styles.
In her Vogue India articles, she credits Sid Sriram, a musician who fuses Carnatic tunes with Western singing, for inspiring her. “When I saw this swagged-out guy in a snapback singing R&B and Carnatic music, I was like, ‘That’s me’,” she says. “That made me believe South Asians can incorporate all parts of ourselves—Carnatic music, Bharatanatyam, R&B and jazz. We can do it all.”
