Defeating Adventism # 181– Seventh-day Adventist Book on the Dangers of Contemplative Prayer

A former Adventist who I occasionally converse with, encouraged me to read the Adventist book titled “The Dangers of Contemplative Prayer” by Howard Peth. He stated that this Adventist did something very rare among Adventists and that was showing discernment and writing a good book. Further, my friend stated this book was well written and accurately exposed many un-Christian contemplative prayer practitioners who were from a broad spectrum. I told him I would take his advice and read this book.
My friend was right, this Adventist did a very good job exposing the history of this un-Christian practice and this Adventist author showed how this old and heretical practice has made its way into the modern church. However, I cannot recommend this book to the Christian community because the author inserts his Adventism into the pages.
After reading this book, I then searched over 19,000 Adventurist magazines I have to see if Adventists ever quoted or wrote favorably about the un-Christian contemplative prayer practitioners exposed in the Howard Peth book.
What I discovered was 138 quotes by Adventists at all levels of the organization who quoted favorably from these un-Christian contemplative prayer authors who were exposed in Mr. Peck’s book. Of the 138 quotes, 8 were after the 2012 copyright of the Peck book and the earliest quote was from 1857, where pantheistic Catholic mystic Madame Guyon was quoted favorably. Additionally, I noted that Mr. Peck did not criticize any Adventists in his book for their usage of the very contemplative prayer advocates he criticized.
Howard Peck did a good job exposing contemplative prayer, but Mr. peck promotes the false religion of Adventism in his book and refuses to recognize his own co-religionists and they error in promoting contemplative prayer authors
