Freshwater catfish soup in a big mango garden | Village food | Outdoor cooking

In our mango garden, the trees are full of growing fruits. Since the branches are getting heavy, my parents use wooden poles to support the weaker ones so they won’t break during wind and rain. The work is not too hard, but looking up for a long time makes the neck sore, especially as my parents are already older and cannot do this all day.

At noon, my mother cooked lunch for the family. She made sour soup with pangasius fish – my father’s favorite dish – and crispy fried snakehead fish with salted seasoning. Cooking right in the garden, under the shade of mango trees with the cool breeze blowing, then sitting together to enjoy the meal beneath the trees, made everything feel peaceful and full of love.
