A colossal cosmic drama is unfolding as the supermassive black hole at the center of our Milky Way galaxy engulfs and destroys a strange dust cloud. Dubbed X7, the cloud weighs approximately 50 times the mass of Earth and has been orbiting Sagittarius A* for the past two decades. Astronomers have been observing the cloud's movements using the powerful W.M. Keck Observatory in Hawaii, revealing that it has gradually stretched as it wrapped around the black hole and is now as long as 3,000 sun-Earth distances. X7 takes approximately 170 years to complete an orbit around the galactic center, and scientists predict that in 2036, it will make its closest approach to the black hole before completely dissipating. The process will produce "fireworks" as the dust cloud heats up and accelerates before crossing the event horizon.
The rare opportunity to observe the effects of the black hole's tidal forces at high resolution is giving astronomers new insights into the physics of the extreme environment surrounding the galactic center. X7 is one of several filaments called G objects that orbit the supermassive black hole at extraordinary speeds of up to 490 miles per second (790 kilometers per second). This cosmic spectacle offers scientists a chance to understand the formation of these structures and predict their future.
