When I wrote this piece, I had been learning the Hovhannes piece, "Fantasy on Japanese Woodprints." So there is a bit of the scale ideas in Tempest. This recording was one of four I made during a two hour time slot. Was able to get it done in fewer takes than the others; (I still hear some things I'm not happy with.) I have added some shakers to my ankles (like Gomez's "Rain Dance") though that was not where I first got the idea. Was at the Main Street Art Festival in Fort Worth and watched a street musician play a djembe while walking. I was hooked. One thing I teach to my students playing this solo is to change the angle of the mallets during the B section. Listen and you can hear the tonal change. (I call it a poom sound. Much less attack; more tone.) If you are looking for this solo, good luck. The publisher, (my publisher,) Southern Music is no longer is business. There are some companies I have found on the internet that may still have copies of the sheet music. To read some performance notes, go to ukenamusic.com.
