The Forsvarets Spesialkommando (FSK) has its roots in the Norwegian special operations groups formed during the Second World War. At the time, commandos from Norwegian Independent Company 1 (also known as Kompani Linge) operated under the command of the British Special Operations Executive, carrying out missions such as the notable sabotage of the heavy water plant in Rjukan in 1943 (Operation Gunnerside). After the war, these sabotage units were disbanded. Only in the 1950s did Norway resume its investment in special forces, creating in 1953 a group of combat divers inspired by the U.S. Navy SEALs and other allied forces.
