USAID workers were allowed to briefly re-enter the headquarters in Washington to collect their personal belongings and clear out their desks. Workers, carrying cardboard boxes of personal items, were applauded by a crowd of about 80 people, including fellow employees and public supporters. In January, Trump ordered a 90-day pause on foreign aid to review alignment with his "America First" policy. The review led to stop-work orders, disrupting USAID's global operations and jeopardizing critical aid such as food and medical supplies. Trump tasked Elon Musk with dismantling USAID as part of efforts to reduce federal government size and address alleged wasteful spending.
