, description of Coochbehar Rashmala fully
Coochbehar Rashmala is one of the most iconic and vibrant winter festivals of North Bengal. Held every year around the Rash Purnima, this festival transforms Coochbehar into a colourful world of lights, culture, devotion, and celebration. At the heart of Rashmala lies the traditional worship of Lord Madan Mohan, followed by days of music, rituals, cultural programs, and a grand fair that attracts thousands of visitors.
Rashmala is famous for its huge fairground filled with giant wheels, Nagar Dolna, food stalls, toy shops, handicraft counters, games, and traditional performances. The entire area glows beautifully at night as decorative lights, mela rides, and colourful shops turn the fair into a magical sight.
One of the most special parts of Rashmala is the feeling of unity — people from all communities come together to enjoy the fair, pray, shop, and celebrate. Families visit in the evening, eat local foods, buy toys, take photos, and enjoy the festive atmosphere. For many, Rashmala is not just a mela… it is a tradition a memory, and a proud cultural identity of Coochbehar.
With its perfect blend of spirituality and entertainment, Coochbehar Rashmala continues to be a symbol of culture, harmony, and joy for the entire region.
About Cooch Behar Rash Mela (Rashmala)
What Is It?
The Rash Mela (also spelled Raas Mela or Rashmala) is an annual winter festival and fair held in Cooch Behar, West Bengal.
It takes place around Rash Purnima (a full-moon day) between November and December.
The fairground is called the Rash Mela Ground, located near the Madan Mohan Temple.
Historical Roots:
The festival dates back to the reign of Maharaja Harendra Narayan (late 1700s–early 1800s).
It has been held almost every year (with exceptions, e.g., in 1912 due to cholera, and in 2020 because of COVID-19).
The Rash Chakra (holy wheel) is at the heart of the celebration — a large semi-cylindrical structure made of bamboo and paper.
That Chakra is traditionally built by a Muslim artisan family (from Ghughumari) for many generations, which makes the festival a symbol of communal harmony.
Religious & Cultural Significance:
The festival honors Lord Madan Mohan, a form of Lord Krishna.
In the temple (Madan Mohan Temple), there are daily pujas (worship), kirtans, and dramatic performances (Jatra) during the festival.
The Rash Chakra is not just decorative: its construction and rotation is a ritual. The District Magistrate of Cooch Behar now rotates it in a formal ceremony, continuing the royal-era tradition.
The Fair (Mela) Itself:
The Rash Mela is not just religious but very festive: there are amusement rides (e.g., ferris wheel), food stalls, handicraft shops, book stalls, clothing, and street games.
People come not only from West Bengal, but also from Assam, Nepal, Bhutan, and Bangladesh to attend.
There’s a cultural stage where regional artists perform — music, dance, folklore, etc.
Symbol of Harmony:
The making of the Ras Chakra by a Muslim family, the participation of people of different faiths, and the celebration of a Hindu festival all together underscores a message of communal unity.
The design of the Chakra often includes depictions of deities from various religious traditions.
Modern Day:
The Cooch Behar Municipality and the Debuttor Trust Board manage the event now.
The event has also grown in its scale and appeal — in recent years, the fair has been extended to around 20 days.
It draws not just local visitors but tourists, and is an important part of Cooch Behar’s cultural tourism.
Artisan Legacy:
The family that builds the Rash Chakra follows a very disciplined ritual: they start working after Lakshmi Puja, maintain certain traditions, and use materials like bamboo, paper, glue, thread.
The Chakra is quite large: the Raas-Danda (the central pole) is about 34 feet long, and part of it stays underground as its base.
Why Rash Mela Is Special:
Historical Continuity: It has been celebrated for over 200 years, making it deeply rooted in Cooch Behar’s royal and cultural history.
Cultural Diversity & Unity: The festival is a rare example of interfaith harmony — Hindu ritual, a Muslim family building a sacred structure, and people from many backgrounds participating.
Tourist Attraction: With its grand fair, cultural programs, and religious rituals, it’s one of the biggest draws in North Bengal during winter.
Artistic Craftsmanship: The Rash Chakra is not just a religious symbol but a piece of art — handmade with bamboo, paper, and very detailed religious imagery.
