Why Disney World Keeps Flooding and the Civil Engineering Behind It

I’m a civil engineer who loves Disney - and one of my favorite things to talk about is Disney’s civil engineering projects. Today we’re diving into why Disney World always seems to be covered in ankle-deep puddles (and sometimes knee-deep!) every time a big Florida storm rolls through.
Here’s the surprising part... it’s not a design flaw. The parks weren’t built wrong, and their drainage system isn’t broken. In fact, much of it is engineered exactly the way it’s meant to operate - including the canals, retention ponds, pumps, utility elevations, and stormwater criteria that govern how water moves (or doesn’t move) across the property.
If you enjoy videos about theme park history, urban design, and “how things work” at Disney World, make sure to subscribe - I’ve got more engineering deep dives, transportation videos, and behind-the-scenes infrastructure stories coming soon.
