Japanese Hiragana Quiz (Combination / Contracted Sounds)

This Japanese video for beginners will test your knowledge in the Japanese Hiragana writing system. There are 36 characters in Hiragana with combination/contracted sounds, all of which appear in this quiz in random order. You will have 3 seconds to read and give your answer for each character. After the 3 seconds are up, the correct answer will appear in the romaji alphabet along with the correct pronunciation. Can you get all of them right?

This video is meant to supplement Japanese language study, along with the rest of my Hiragana Lessons videos. This quiz covers the kana learned in the third lesson (Hiragana Combination/Contracted Sounds). So, if you struggle with reading the characters during this quiz, I recommend revisiting that particular lesson.

Combination Hiragana are syllables that are produced when characters that end with i are combined with small(chiisai) kana from the y Column (ya yu yo). This combination creates a brand new syllable that is contracted and makes "one single sound". These are also called "yōon".

Hiragana is one of the three writing systems in the Japanese language, along with Katakana and Kanji. It is the foundation to learning Japanese, and once you master this kana, you can move on to the second step, learning Katakana and vocabulary!
