Changing to Nylon Strings for Modern Diatonic Lyres

Step by Step instructions on how to change the strings on modern diatonic lyres from wire to nylon strings. Please note that I am not a luthier and deciding to change to nylon strings is a gamble I took with my lyre for personal reasons as well as to help members in our lyre community to answer questions of whether it is possible, provide simple solutions and step by step instructions. What you are watching is my first attempt to doing this, documenting critical steps and highlighting key observations. Changing your lyre strings is a decision you need to make for yourself along with the responsibility that goes with it. This is shared in hopes of providing viewers with as much information to help. I would urge you to watch through the end especially the side by side sound comparison. Changing to a different string changes the quality of sound on any instrument. If nylon strung lyres is your preferred instrument and you can afford it or wait until you can, then this is always the best route as that instrument would have been built and regulated for this and it will be less work and less issues to troubleshoot. If you have already gotten used to the sound of wire strings on your lyres, you may find that getting used to the sound of the new strings will take time. Part of this is because of the new tone and the lost in resonance. I find the sound on the high strings close to the high notes on a harp.
