STORYLINE
Saddam Hussein's lawyer Khalil al-Duelimi on Sunday vehemently condemned the assassination of his colleague, Saadoun al-Janabi, who was kidnapped and killed by unknown gunmen on October 20, in Baghdad.
Saadoun Sughaiyer Al-Janabi was the lawyer of one Saddam's seven co-defendants in the Dujail issue.
Khalil al-Duelimi denounced his assassination as a "cowardly act" and insisted Iraqi and American governments should work for the protection and safeguard of the lives of his colleagues, "who are performing their duty in an independent and professional way."
He also demanded that the UN send an international team to investigate into the assassination of al-Janabi.
Al-Janabi was abducted late on Thursday by gunmen, some of them masked, who burst into his office and dragged him away.
The kidnap came a day after al-Janabi participated in the first session of the trial.
His body, with two bullet shots to the head, was found hours later on a pavement near Fardous Mosque in the eastern neighbourhood of Ur, near the site of his office, police said.
His identity was confirmed on Friday by the police.
The killing was the first setback for a tribunal that has been held under tight security.
Al-Duleimi has implicitly accused the Shiite Badr militias of being behind the act.
The Badr militia is the military wing of the Shiite cleric Abdul-Aziz al-Hakim.
Al-Janabi was defending Awad Hamed al-Bandar, the former head of Saddam's Revolutionary Court.
The defendants have pleaded innocent.
