Presented by the New York Province of the Society of Jesus and produced by Caravel Films, Inc., “The Greater Glory” is a 1950s-era black-and-white film narrated by Reverend Robert J. Cannon S.J. The film answers the questions, “what are the Jesuits?” and “how does one become a Jesuit?” by showing the various steps that it takes a — 15 years of study and prayer — to become a member of the order.

Opening credits play over footage and group of clergymen in black robes appear walking along path (0:07). Reverend Robert J. Cannon S.J. speaks to camera from office about origins of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) founded by St. Ignatius of Loyola (0:48-3:23). Exterior view St. Andrew-on-Hudson Novitiate, Poughkeepsie, NY (today Culinary Institute of America) (3:26). Novices (taking their first steps to know Christ) in black robes socializing outside of main campus building (3:53). The Long Retreat: Thirty days of silence and prayer in which the Jesuit novice reflects on the Gospels and tests his desire for the priesthood; Shots of novices praying in chapel (4:32). Novice walks contemplatively along nature trail (5:20). After the Long Retreat continue with “First Studies:” Two year period of manual labor to help community i.e. chopping wood, cleaning grass lawn, doing dishes, shining floors (5:48). Language study: Shots of novices in Latin, Greek, and French classes (6:25). Daily schedule of novice: First prayer at 5:30, then mass, classes, meditation, study, meals punctuated by chime of the bell (6:44). After two years of training and study, novices reach day of dedication (7:53). Juniorate stage (2 years): Former novices move into junior wing of campus, prepare beds; Intense study of “classics” in library i.e. Cicero, Virgil, Horace, Homer, Plato, Aristotle; Other scholarly learning of subjects like history, math, English (8:48). Young men play basketball in outdoor area (10:14). Elocution and public speaking skills: Junior walks to pulpit in dining hall and preaches to community; Drama and theater; Three hour daily devotion (10:36). Philosophy stage (3 years): Young men in philosophy stage arrive at Woodstock College, Maryland campus for study of philosophy and sciences; Men assemble and prepare their individual rooms (12:20). Courses less lectures and more debates on nature of reason, human soul, essence of being (13:41). After 3 years men graduate from seminary, assigned to teach at high schools; Camera zooms into shipping label posted for Regis High School in NYC (15:22). Regency stage (3 years): Jesuit steps out into school courtyard, high school students play basketball (15:32). Jesuit walks around new classroom; Teaches lessons in classroom and directs extra curricular activities (16:12). Jesuit teacher sits at back of chapel and observes as students take communion (17:42). Theology stage (4 years): What appears to be 1951 Chevrolet Fleetline pulls up to Woodstock College, Jesuit returns to seminary for study of sacred theology and cloyed life of a Jesuit (18:25). Group of theologians sit in cloister for lecture on dogmatic theology, moral theology etc. (19:01). Training in rights and ceremonies of the priesthood (20:55). Men attend ceremony where they are ordained as priests (21:37). Tertianship stage (final stage, 1 year): Camera pans grounds of Our Lady of Martyrs in Auriesville, New York; As if returning to novice sequence scenes of men studying and doing tasks like cleaning floors etc. (22:23). Graduates hurriedly rush to bulletin board to see where they will be posted (23:59). Different career paths for Jesuit priest: At university (shot of Keating Hall, Fordham University), teacher at high school, writer at newspaper (24:29). Quick shots of different Jesuit publications in New York i.e. America, The Catholic Mind (25:26). Foreign missions around Asia, Latin America (25:46). Chaplain for U.S. Army, at hospital (26:41). The End (27:48).
