LL Cool J calls himself the most important rapper in history during an Apple Music interview, highlighting his impact on love songs and G.O.A.T. terminology.
LL Cool J, a pioneer in hip-hop, recently declared himself the "most important rapper that ever existed" during an appearance on Apple Music's Le Code podcast. Speaking with host Mehdi Maïzi, LL reflected on his groundbreaking contributions to the genre, stating, “I’m going to say this humbly, but I really mean this ... I think one day people are going to wake up and realize that LL Cool J is the most important rapper that ever existed.”
The rap icon pointed to his role in shaping hip-hop’s landscape, emphasizing innovations like introducing love songs into rap and popularizing the term "G.O.A.T." (Greatest of All Time). “When it comes to the love songs, they’re gonna say, ‘This is the guy that introduced the love songs and all the love sh*t.’ When it comes to the G.O.A.T terminology, they gon’ say, ‘This is the guy who came up with all the G.O.A.T stuff,’” he said.
LL Cool J’s career spans nearly four decades, starting with his debut album Radio in 1985, which was Def Jam’s first LP. His 2000 album, G.O.A.T. Featuring James T. Smith: The Greatest of All Time, underscored his self-perceived place in hip-hop’s hierarchy.
The 23-time Grammy nominee recently released his 14th album, The Force. Speaking to TMZ in August, he credited his longevity to hard work, saying, “It takes consistent effort and dedication to remain relevant.”
