Two books from Marvel have completely renewed my interest in the 616 and what the Marvel universe has to offer, Al Ewing’s Immortal Hulk, and Donny Cate’s Venom,

Both runs have redefined their characters, leaving them with greater depth and deeper characterization than before, with their stories serving as a road trip through the characters histories and the lore behind them, with each book bringing about new perspective to various moments throughout the characters comic book history, choosing not to disrespect or retcon the past, but to build upon it instead, and turn it on its head, Choosing to recontextualize past moments instead of erasing them in favor of something new These stories subvert the past in a way that ties otherwise unrelated stories together, and paints a greater picture of these characters roles in Marvel cosmology, In both runs, you see elder Gods awakening from the shadows, with the revelation that Hulk and Venom might have something more to do with that, than they’re initially aware of, All while previously dead enemies and allies begin to resurrect themselves,Revealing the symbiotes and gamma radiated hulk monsters to have deeper, more cosmic roots, than we were ever aware of,

Hulk and Venom both develop new monstrous abilities to combat the eldritch horrors of their new stories,The new powers they develop are shown off in amazing ways on page, with Joe Bennet utilizing this beautiful Junji ito type body horror for the gamma infected characters, And Ryan Stegman’s Venom utilizating aesthetics that look like they walked straight out of Heavy Metal,

All of this stands in stark contrast to how you would normally see the characters interpreted in an American comic,
