What’s something about you that people would never guess just by looking at you?
If you could choose any new name for yourself (fun or serious), what would it be and why?
Have you ever tried to “pretend” to be something you weren’t to impress someone?
What’s one talent or interest you have that you’re glad is not the whole of who you are?

Deeper Discussion Questions
Thomas said our talents are “expressions of our identity, not the foundation.” Why is that an important distinction?
What are some “identity labels” people your age cling to — and how can those labels become unhealthy or unstable?
How have shame, past mistakes, or trauma tried to name you or shape your identity?
Jacob’s old name (deceiver) described his patterns and his past. What “old names” do you think people carry today?
Why do you think God made Jacob face his old identity (“What is your name?”) before giving him a new one?
Jacob wrestled with God until he reached the end of his strength. Have you ever reached a point where you realized you couldn’t “fix” your life on your own?
God touched Jacob’s hip — wounding him in a way that produced dependence. What does it look like for God to lovingly confront us today?
Jacob walked away blessed and limping. How can weakness actually become a reminder of grace?
What does it mean that our identity in Jesus is received, not achieved?
Thomas said Jesus gives us a new name, just like Jacob. What do you think that new name represents for you?
Extend the Conversation Questions
Read Genesis 32:22–32. Where do you see yourself in Jacob’s story? What part of his struggle feels most familiar?
Read Revelation 2:17. What does it mean to you that Jesus promises a “white stone” — innocence, acceptance, and a new name?
Think back on your life: where have you felt God “wrestling” with you, not to destroy you but to reshape you?
If your identity is truly “child of God,” how would your choices, confidence, or relationships change this week?
What “old names” are you still holding onto — and what would it look like to finally release them and receive the identity God gives?
