Two years ago, we bought a rundown akiya house in rural Japan — a former sake brewery, over 150 years old, tucked away in the countryside of Shimane Prefecture. We took a risk, followed our dream and became owners of an historic kominka in a beautiful mountain village. It's been an experience full of success and challenges and now we ask - Has it been worth it? Have we achieved our goals? Can we keep going?
In this video, we’re sharing what’s really happened since then — the surprises, the challenges, the wildlife, the renovations, and the joys of slowly integrating into the local community and making new friends. This is the honest truth about what it means to take on an old, abandoned house, learning as you go, and trying to build a new way of life living between two countries - Australia and Japan. We also share some exciting plans in the pipeline for our continuing journey.
Whether you're dreaming of buying your own Japanese property or just curious about what happens after the 'honeymoon phase', this is for you.
