From Inclusion to Justice: On Lamenting Injustice, Repenting from Ableism, and Amplifying Disabled Flourishing
In this lecture, Raffety will present insights from her ethnographic research with disabled leaders and churches and her book, From Inclusion to Justice: Disability, Ministry, and Congregational Leadership (Baylor, 2022). She argues that lament and repentance are necessary toward grappling with the sin of ableism in churches today, appreciating and amplifying disabled ministry and leadership, and ushering in a Kingdom of God that provides a more expansive vision for human flourishing.
Erin Raffety (she/her) is a PC(USA) Pastor, Practical Theologian, Cultural Anthropologist, and Researcher at Princeton Seminary, Princeton University, and The Center of Theological Inquiry. Her research brings together ethnographic methods to study Christian congregations, particularly disabled people, ministry, and leadership. She is the author of two books, Families We Need: Disability, Abandonment, and Foster Care’s Resistance in Contemporary China (Rutgers, 2023) and From Inclusion to Justice: Disability, Ministry, and Congregational Leadership (Baylor, 2022).
