The aim of this video is to make a small contribution to a much larger societal project: that of creating aged-friendly and inclusive communities.
By getting to know individual members of any group, we begin to break down negative stereotypes about them and their communities. Breaking down negative stereotypes about seniors can create a more positive perception of ageing, and studies suggest that older people who have a primarily positive view of ageing live longer.
Additionally, by sharing their stories, seniors become more visible and valued in the wider community, again helping to breakdown ageist attitudes.
An important part of this project was its intergenerational dimension. In collaboration with Menai High School, we worked with a group of Year 10 students who interviewed a number of senior women and wrote articles (or in one case, an oral history) about the lives of those women and their views on growing older.
